Building Relationships in Roatán – May update, 2014

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

The last week of April and first two weeks in May were really busy, first gathering construction materials and a Honduran construction team, then the arrival of the team from Ontario and the beginning of the church foundation.  We were excited to start building, and we continue to be excited because we know better things are coming for Emmanuel Church in Coxen Hole.

It was really a blessing to meet the 6-person team from St. Bride’s Anglican Church, Mississauga, ON. On May 5th, they, together with the Honduran team, had the privilege of beginning construction on the foundation of the church building. We all worked hard and had a lot of fun during the week, but the most important thing is that we are not just building a church, but are building a relationship between congregations.

We as a congregation would like to say thank you to St Bride’s parish, and especially the team, who sacrificed time with family and all the comforts of home to come down to Roatán and work with us.

We had the opportunity to share some activities with the team:

On On the 4th we baptized two women at the beach from the church in Brick Bay and the team took part in the evening services for the Coxen Hole congregation.

On the 6th we celebrated a special liturgy to install the first brick of the construction. This is a special service, as we marked the four corners for the church building and installed the first brick where the altar will be located.

But it was not only activities and work; we also gave the team a tour of the island and went to cool off at a nice beach in West Bay.

We will continue the construction all this year and, pending full funding, we hope to finish it by the end of 2015, God willing.

  • Both our congregations: Brick Bay and especially for our church in Coxen Hole to reach out to others near the site so they can come to our church and worship God.
  • Funding to continue the construction through 2015 and for the participation of short-term teams from Canada and the USA.
